Frequently Asked Questions

Some Answers About Our Brand, Our Technology & Features

What exactly is HybridStep?

HybridStep is a high-tech, precision-engineered product and the world's first Wearable Laboratory. It is a registered trademark of Neurment Technologies, a deep-tech company developing Adaptive Bio-AIoT Systems. Therefore, at its core lies Neurment’s proprietary intelligence technology, Neurment IO™, guaranteeing the quality and performance of every HybridStep you purchase.

We present highly advanced technology concealed within a stylish and premium design that people will enjoy wearing in their daily lives. Unlike standard "smart" shoes that use basic accelerometers merely to count steps, HybridStep utilises clinical-grade Tekscan® pressure sensors and Bosch® IMU sensors to analyse complex biomechanical data—such as ground reaction force, pronation, and stride symmetry—in real-time.

We consider ourselves the "Gulfstream of Footwear". It is created for those who wish to go further, faster, and smarter.

Core Values (The HybridStep Standard)

To realise our vision, we adhere to three non-negotiable principles:

  • Radical Ownership (No Subscription): We believe your health data belongs to you, not a rental service. Therefore, HybridStep has no monthly fees. When you buy the device, the data is yours.
  • Invisible Science: Complex on the inside, simple on the outside. We use clinical-grade sensors and aerospace engineering, yet the user experience remains seamless and smooth.
  • Holistic Intelligence: We do not build walled gardens. HybridStep features two-way integration with Apple Health and Google Fit, reading your holistic data (sleep/heart rate) to provide context-aware coaching.

What does your slogan "Know Deeper. Go Further." mean?

It represents our philosophy of "Truth in Movement". Most brands sell you foam and marketing. We believe you cannot improve what you cannot measure. By knowing your biometric data "Deeper" (at a granular, millisecond level), you can optimise your performance and physically "Go Further".

How does the HybridStep philosophy align with the "Quantified Self" and "Biohacker"movements?

The "Quantified Self" movement aims for self-knowledge through numbers. However, this demographic has hit a "Data Plateau" with current wearables that offer only derivative metrics (Sleep, Pulse, Steps).

HybridStep opens a new frontier: "Kinetic Biohacking". We provide access to the "source code" of movement—Force, Power, and Torque—previously locked away in university laboratories. For a biohacker, HybridStep is not a shoe; it is a tool to optimise mechanical efficiency, increase longevity, and protect the musculoskeletal system. It aligns perfectly with the desire for granular, actionable, and scientific control over one's own biology.

What is the brand's Endgame?

Our ultimate goal is to become the Operating System (OS) of Human Movement. We are not just selling shoes; we are selling years of mobility. Walking speed and gait stability are the best biomarkers for longevity. By preserving gait quality into old age and using data to prevent the global "Silent Epidemic" of chronic pain and injury, HybridStep contributes directly to Healthspan.

Is this technology a luxury or a necessity?

In a world where the annual cost of musculoskeletal disorders exceeds $420 billion globally, HybridStep is not a luxury but a proactive health investment. Instead of spending thousands on expensive MRI scans or physiotherapy sessions, possessing a technology that prevents the problem before it occurs is, in our view, a necessity for long-term health economics.

Who is HybridStep designed for?

HybridStep is optimised for individuals who place movement at the centre of their lives and make data-driven decisions:

  • Biohackers: Those who optimise sleep and nutrition but remain in a blind spot regarding movement mechanics.
  • Data-Driven Athletes & Runners: Those seeking "Real-World Evidence" outside the lab, chasing real and marginal gains.
  • Active Lifestylers: Professionals who stand all day, suffer from poor posture, and wish to protect their long-term musculoskeletal health.

Are Women's/Men's models different?

Whilst sharing a unisex design language, the lasts (moulds) are optimised according to gender-specific biomechanical volumes.

How is the sizing and fit?

Our shoes are manufactured according to standard athletic shoe sizes. The "Engineered Mesh" upper adapts to the shape of the foot, providing an adaptive fit. Additionally, the "Find your fit" module on our website helps you choose the most suitable shoe and have a seamless purchasing experience. In cases where the shoe size does not fit, we offer unconditional size exchange within 14 days.

How does HybridStep compare in terms of "Actionability"?

Most wearables give you passive numbers like a "Sleep Score" or "Readiness Score". HybridStep gives active commands, such as "Gait Retraining Tips" (e.g., "Shorten your stride"). The difference is akin to a weather report ("It is raining") versus advice ("Take an umbrella"). We are the only platform focused not just on monitoring movement, but on teaching and improving it.

Does HybridStep work only for running, or also for walking and standing?

It is holistic. While running requires high-frequency sampling, HybridStep also features specialised modes for "Postural Sway" and "Walking Gait". For standing workers (nurses, retail), it tracks "Static Fatigue", monitoring weight shifts that indicate back stress. For walkers, it tracks "Gait Variability", a crucial indicator of neurological health and fall risk in ageing populations. The versatility provided by the 501 Lifestyle and 701 Kinetic series ensures HybridStep serves not only elite runners but the entire "Active Life" demographic.

How does it differ from global shoe brands?

Global brands make excellent foam. We match their foam quality but add a Brain. HybridStep is an "Active Partner". A running shoe that consists merely of foam and brand prestige cannot tell you why your knee hurts, but HybridStep can.

How is this different from "Smart Insoles"?

While smart insoles seem like a good idea in theory, in practice they suffer from two fatal flaws:

  • Friction and Slippage (Data Noise): Insoles slide inside the shoe. Is the sensor measuring your pronation or the insole sliding? This "noise" corrupts the data. HybridStep sensors are fused into the chassis during manufacturing, ensuring 100% data integrity.
  • Usability Friction: Removing insoles to charge them and swapping them between shoes is cumbersome. This hinders long-term use. HybridStep operates on a "Set & Forget" principle.

How does HybridStep's real-time coaching work and how is it different from apps?

HybridStep redefines coaching by moving from "Passive Notification" to "Active Correction."

Most apps and watches use "Passive Coaching"—they tell you split times or heart rate averages every kilometer. By the time you hear it, the mistake has already happened.

HybridStep utilizes a Closed-Loop Biofeedback System:

Zero-Latency Edge Computing: Our sensors process data at 100-200Hz directly inside the shoe. We don't wait to send data to the cloud. This allows us to detect a bad step within milliseconds of it happening.

Eyes-Free Feedback: We believe technology should not distract you.

Haptic Nudges: The shoe vibrates gently to signal urgent mechanical errors (e.g., dangerously high impact or sudden asymmetry).

Audio Cues: Precise voice commands via headphones correct your form instantly (e.g., "Increase cadence to reduce knee stress").

Context Awareness: The AI knows the difference between "stopping for a traffic light" and "fatigue-induced stopping," offering advice that fits the actual context of your movement.

It corrects the cause (biomechanics), not just the symptom (speed).

What is the difference between "Passive Comfort" and "Active Intelligence"?

The industrial status quo, "Passive Comfort", uses thick foams to absorb impact but leaves you biomechanically blind (Sensory Deprivation). The foam absorbs the shock but doesn't tell you why you are landing hard. "Active Intelligence (HybridStep) measures the impact and alerts you via Neurment IO™ to correct your gait and running. To protect you, we rely not just on passive material, but on active data and neuromuscular awareness.

What does "Conscious Confidence" mean?

Most athletes underperform because of mid-race doubt:"Am I burning out too early?"or"Is my stride losing efficiency?"HybridStep replaces that hesitation with Conscious Confidence. Instead ofhopingfor a personal best, you runknowingyour biomechanical output and energy efficiency are perfectly optimized. We eliminate the guesswork, giving you the certainty to push your limits and shatter your records.

Is there really no monthly subscription fee? How is that possible?

Yes, there are No Subscriptions and no recurring payments. Unlike competitors who rent your own data back to you, HybridStep believes in the Ownership Economy. You pay once for the shoe; you own the data and software access.

Does "No Subscription" mean the App is limited?

No. You get full access to the HybridStep App, including Real-Time Gait Analysis, Movement Health Score, Fatigue Monitor, and Posture Correction. We do not lock our features behind a paywall.

How does the "Community" feature in the app work?

HybridStep builds a "Conscious Community". Users can share their "Movement Health Scores" (not just their times). This creates a leaderboard based on efficiency and longevity, not just speed. We promote a culture of health over ego.

What sensors are inside the shoe?

We use a fusion of two industry-leading technologies. Our proprietary intelligence, Neurment IO™, performs deep mathematical calculations to transform this fusion data into meaningful insights:

  • Tekscan® FSR (Force Sensing Resistors): The gold standard in pressure mapping, used in medical clinics.
  • Bosch® IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit): Aerospace-grade accelerometers and gyroscopes for 6-axis motion tracking

Why is "Dual Sensor Fusion" superior to single-sensor systems?

A standalone IMU (Pods) cannot measure "force" (it only estimates it), and a standalone FSR (Insoles) cannot see the foot's "trajectory" in the air. "Dual Sensor Fusion" is the architectural integration of Inertial Measurement Units (IMU) and Force Sensing Resistors (FSR) into a unified data stream. We derive deep insights from this dual fusion via our proprietary intelligence, Neurment IO, and offer personalised coaching.

While other "smart shoes" operate with "Blind Spots" and waste time guessing, HybridStep has succeeded in becoming the only integrated platform that simultaneously measures and interprets both the geometry (Kinematics) and power (Kinetics) of movement.

How does HybridStep handle "Bad Data" or irregular movements?

Dual Sensor Fusion provides a validation layer. If the IMU detects a large acceleration (like kicking a ball) but the FSR detects no ground pressure, the AI classifies this as a "Non-Gait Event" and filters it out of the load calculation. This "Contextual Filtering" ensures the "Movement Health Score" is not corrupted by random daily noise, preserving the integrity of long-term health trends.

What data does HybridStep measure?

HybridStep monitors your biology in real-time. Our 100Hz Sensor Matrix captures the complete spectrum of human movement, from static posture to explosive sprints. Here is the full breakdown of our proprietary and biomechanical metrics:

1. PROPRIETARY HEALTH SCORES (The "Executive Summary")

  • Movement Health Score™: Your overall biomechanical credit score (0-100). An aggregate algorithm that summarizes stability, symmetry, and efficiency into one simple daily metric.
  • Skeleton Load Index™: Not all impact is bad. This metric distinguishes between "muscle load" (good) and "skeletal shock" (bad), measuring the cumulative stress placed directly on your bones.
  • The Kinetic Battery™: The structural fuel gauge. It predicts exactly how much capacity your muscles and tendons have left before injury risk spikes.
  • Fatigue Monitor: Tracks the real-time rate of neuromuscular fatigue accumulation during your session, alerting you when your form begins to break down.

2. POSTURE & ALIGNMENT (The "Foundation")

  • Static Posture Quality™: Even when standing still, the shoe works. It analyzes your Center of Pressure (COP) and weight distribution to detect postural sway and alignment issues.
  • Pronation Velocity: The speed of your foot's inward roll, identifying ankle instability.
  • Foot Strike Angle: Precise detection of heel, midfoot, or forefoot landing patterns.

3. IMPACT & PROTECTION (The "Shield")

  • Impact Loading Rate (ILR): The speed at which shock travels up to the knee.
  • Tibial Shock: Vibration transmitted to the tibia bone.
  • Peak Impact Force (G-Force): Maximum shock absorbed per step.
  • Shock Attenuation: The body’s ability to naturally dampen impact.

4. SPRING & EFFICIENCY (The "Engine")

  • Vertical Stiffness (Kvert): Leg spring stiffness and elasticity.
  • Energy Return %: Recycled energy efficiency.
  • Vertical Oscillation: Wasted up/down energy.
  • Braking Force: Deceleration force upon landing.

5. SPATIO-TEMPORAL MECHANICS (The "Form")

  • Ground Contact Time (GCT): Milliseconds on the ground.
  • Flight Time: Milliseconds in the air.
  • Stride Length: Distance per step.
  • Cadence: Steps per minute optimization.

6. SYMMETRY LAB (The "Balance")

  • GCT Balance: Left/Right ground time symmetry.
  • Impact Asymmetry: Left/Right load distribution.
  • Stiffness Asymmetry: Left/Right strength balance.

What is "Neuromuscular Response Time (NRT)?

NRT is the reflex speed of the nervous system. It is the time interval between an unexpected jolt (stepping on a pebble) and the muscle's stabilising firing. A slow NRT is a major predictor for chronic ankle instability and fall risk. HybridStep measures this by detecting the milliseconds between a sudden IMU "tilt" event and the corresponding FSR "pressure correction". By monitoring NRT, the system acts like a neurological health monitor, alerting users if their reflexes are too slow for technical terrain.

Can HybridStep detect the difference between surface types (e.g., Concrete vs. Grass)?

Yes. This is a unique capability of HybridStep’s Dual Sensor Fusion technology. Neurment IO™ analyses the "Impact Signature" during your movement to classify the surface. This allows the system to contextualise fatigue. Running 5 km on sand creates different fatigue markers than running 5 km on asphalt, and the AI adjusts recovery advice accordingly.

What is the importance of "Ground Truth" data in the context of biomechanics?

"Ground Truth" refers to data obtained by direct observation rather than inference. In analytics, the quality of the output is limited by the quality of the input. Wrist-based devices provide "noisy", inferential data (proxy data). HybridStep provides "Ground Truth" data because it positions sensors at the boundary condition of the physical event (the foot-ground interface).

This data superiority means Neurment IO™ is trained on the absolute reality of human movement rather than statistical approximations. This makes HybridStep's data assets more valuable than the diluted data lakes of other wearable technologies.

Can it detect "Micro-Asymmetries" invisible to the naked eye?

Human observation and basic video analysis can typically detect asymmetries of 10-15%. However, "Micro-Asymmetries" of 3-5% are often precursors to chronic injury. HybridStep's Dual Sensor architecture compares the force integral between the left and right foot over time with millisecond precision. It detects not only that the left foot stays on the ground longer (IMU) but that the right foot takes 5% higher peak load (FSR) to compensate. This subtle detection of "load shifting" allows users to correct imbalances before tissue damage occurs.

What is "Gait Retraining" and how does HybridStep apply it in real-time?

"Gait Retraining" is the process of altering movement patterns to reduce injury risk. Historically, this required a physiotherapist to constantly monitor you on the treadmill. HybridStep democratises this by providing "Augmented Feedback". Through the phone's audio or haptic feedback, the AI Coach monitors metrics like VLR or Cadence. If the user enters a "Risk Zone", the Coach (App) intervenes immediately with instant notifications. Clinical studies prove that this real-time biofeedback is effective in permanently reducing VLR and injury risk.

How does the "Fatigue Monitor" work?

Injuries often happen not at the start of training, but when form breaks down with fatigue. Traditional lab tests only analyse the athlete when they are "fresh" (Snapshot error). HybridStep monitors the user's biomechanics throughout the run and detects deviations from "Fresh Form". When fatigue signs such as degraded stride symmetry or extended Ground Contact Time (GCT) are detected, the system alerts the user, providing "Proactive Prevention". This helps prevent injuries caused by pushing yourself when tired.

How is "Running Economy" measured?

Using Virtual Stiffness and IMU data, we calculate how much of the total energy expended is used to propel you forward versus how much is wasted bouncing you upwards (vertical oscillation).

What is Vertical Loading Rate (VLR) and why is it the "most critical risk factor" for runners?

VLR is the speed at which impact force is applied to the body. Imagine the difference between being pushed by a human (Low VLR) and being hit by a hammer (High VLR). Even if total force is the same, the speed of impact defines the damage potential. High VLR sends a "shockwave" up the bone before muscles can dampen it, causing micro-cracks that lead to stress fractures and shin splints. HybridStep is the only smart shoes that measures VLR directly via FSR/IMU fusion, giving runners visibility of this "jackhammer effect" destroying their bones.

What evidence supports that real-time feedback reduces injury incidence?

A systematic review published in the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy (2022) confirms that gait retraining with biofeedback significantly reduces VLR and lowers the 1 year incidence of running injuries. Furthermore, studies show these motor pattern changes are retained even after feedback is removed (neuroplasticity). HybridStep automates this clinically proven intervention, placing a "virtual walking lab" in every runner's ear.

How does HybridStep assist in "Return to Play" protocols after an injury?

HybridStep provides an objective "symmetry benchmark" between the recovering leg and the healthy leg. A physiotherapist or user can set a target (e.g., "reach <3% asymmetry for 1 km"). Real-time feedback allows the user to strives to assist in achieving a balanced recovery.

Is there Apple Health and Google Fit integration?

Yes, full integration. HybridStep writes daily steps, distance, active energy, and gait asymmetry data directly to Apple Health and Google Fit databases. Likewise, it reads your Pulse, Oxygen (SpO2), Sleep, and HRV (Heart Rate Variability) data to diversify its analysis, offering you a truly holistic coaching solution.

Does the technology constantly improve?

The sensors are fixed, but the algorithms interpreting them (Neurment IO™) are updated OTA (Over-The-Air). A 901R bought today will be "smarter" next year because the AI will have learned to extract more insights from the same signals.

If the technology is the same, why are there different models?

All HybridStep models feature the same technology, but their bodies are customised for specific physical activities:

  • 501: Optimised for Low Impact and comfort. Ideal for daily use, walking, the office, and travel.
  • 701: Features enhanced lateral stability for active living and dynamic walks. The most suitable model for jobs requiring prolonged standing and for brisk walking.
  • 901R: The flagship running model. Features high G-Force resistant reactive foam, a reinforced heel counter, and an energy return system. The mandatory choice for Marathon training.

Does this hardware add weight to the shoe?

The total weight of the electronic module, including the entire sensor matrix, processor, and battery, is under 20 grams. This weight is placed at the shoe's centre of gravity and is not felt by the user.

Is the shoe waterproof and durable for trail running?

The 901 and 701 series feature "IP67" rated sensor housings. They are dustproof and can withstand immersion in water (puddles, rain, stream crossings). The electronics are embedded and sealed within the body, protecting them from the mud and impact of trail running.

Which model should I buy for marathon training?

You must choose the 901R model. It contains a reinforced heel counter, reactive foam, and engineered mesh designed to withstand the repetitive high G-Force impacts of running.

Do I need to carry my phone to track a run?

The shoes have internal memory (Flash Storage) capable of storing hours of trainingdata. You can run "Phone-free". When you return, the shoes automatically sync with the app via BLE when in range. However, for real-time audio coaching, the phone is required to process the instant feedback loop.

Will you develop models for other sports (Golf, Tennis, Basketball)?

Yes. Physics is universal. We can detect the "Weight Shift" in a golf swing or the "Jump Load" in basketball. The 901 Pro series is the first step towards a "Multi-Sport Platform" that will dominate all athletic footwear verticals.

We intend to include as many people as possible in HybridStep's elite community. Our R&D work continues for many sports, including motor sports.

Which geographies do the design and manufacturing processes cover?

The brand follows a "Global Centre of Excellence" model. Aesthetic design and user experience (UX) are shaped in London (Designed in London); electronic power units and sensor architecture are developed with leading European technology firms (Powered by Nordic® & Bosch®); and high-quality textile and precision assembly craftsmanship are carried out in facilities in Türkiye (Made in Türkiye). This multinational structure guarantees both aesthetic and engineering quality.

Will I pay customs duty on international shipments?

No. HybridStep operates on a DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) basis for key markets like the UK, USA, Canada, and Europe. The price you see on the website includes all taxes and fees; no extra charges are demanded at the door. We are also conducting localisation studies in over 30 countries by expanding our distributor agreements

What is the warranty coverage?

We offer a 1-Year Warranty on electronic components (Sensors, Battery, Chipset), footwear materials, and workmanship. This is a testament to our confidence in the durability of our technology and manufacturing. We do not offer a warranty for user errors falling outside of these categories!

How is data privacy ensured?

Your biomechanical data is as unique as your fingerprint, and we treat it with the same level of security.

  • We do not collect your personal health data.
  • All data transferred from your shoe to the cloud is completely masked and anonymised.
  • This means no data carries a personal signature or is tagged with personal information.
  • We represent the gold standard in data privacy and are fully GDPR compliant.

Can user data be deleted?

Yes. In compliance with GDPR and CCPA, the app features a "Right to be Forgotten" button. When pressed, the encryption keys and data on the phone are destroyed locally. The system adheres to ISO 24745 standards for the protection of biometric data.

Is HybridStep compliant with GDPR (Europe) and CCPA (California)?

Yes. Our architecture exceeds the requirements of both. By treating biomechanical data as "Special Category Data" (GDPR Article 9) and requiring explicit, granular consent for any processing, we adhere to the strictest global standards. Furthermore, refusing to store identifiable biometrics centrally bypasses most jurisdictional risks associated with cross-border data transfer.

Does HybridStep track my GPS location?

The shoes themselves do not have GPS (to save battery and privacy). GPS data is pulled from your phone only when you start a tracked activity in the App.

Isn't the price high for a shoe?

No. Because HybridStep is not just a shoe; it is a Wearable Laboratory. Standard shoes are made of foam and fabric. HybridStep integrates a Nordic® microcomputer, Bosch® motion sensors, and Tekscan® pressure mapping arrays into this structure.

Our price also includes all international taxes (DDP), Express Shipping, and software access. The price reflects the cost, not a marketing markup. When compared to a standard shoe (£150) + a foot pod (£200) + a gait analysis subscription (£30/mo), HybridStep is significantly more economical.
